ABG-Intelli’agence provides a mission of public interest aimed at promoting and fostering the employment of PhD holders and junior researchers in industrial laboratories and private companies in France and abroad.
A Job Service and a Training Department are the basis of its main activities.
A new web site implemented during summer 2010 allows the recruiters to publish jobs opportunities and theses proposals. PhD holders can also put on line their résumés. 4,000 job opportunities and 3,200 PhD theses have been published in 2010. More than 2,200 résumés are currently on line.
The Training Department designs and implements training and tutoring activities aimed at helping PhD students to build career plans and prepare them to find positions in the private sector. The most recognized training modules are the Doctoriales (a residential seminar with business specialists) and the Nouveau Chapitre de la Thèse® (an Addendum to the Thesis) aimed at training PhD students to identify and highlight the professional competences they have acquired throughout their theses work.
The network of ABG-intelli’agence alumni comprises more than 2,000 people.

La récente démission du ministre de la défense allemand, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, montre que la thèse n’est pas un simple diplôme que l’on peut obtenir à la légère et que le titre de docteur ne peut être usurpé.

Accusé d’avoir plagié les deux tiers de sa thèse de doctorat de droit public, sans aucune référence aux auteurs des textes largement empruntés, l’homme politique phare du gouvernement d’Angela Merkel a été contraint de quitter son ministère et son siège de député. Une telle pratique jetait un discrédit trop grave sur un titre universitaire particulièrement prestigieux en Allemagne, dont est également titulaire la chancelière.

Cette affaire rappelle l’importance de l’innovation dans les recherches doctorales, contrairement aux critiques ordinaires qui dénigrent trop souvent le travail des docteurs. Ces derniers sont soumis aux règles d’exigence du monde universitaire, auxquelles personne ne peut se soustraire, pas même un ministre bénéficiant d’une bonne cote de popularité.

Nous ne pouvons que nous réjouir d’une telle sanction, néanmoins il est difficile de ne pas se poser la question : Et si une telle affaire avait été révélée en France ? Quelles auraient été les réactions de la société ? De notre côté du Rhin, on conçoit difficilement qu’un discrédit porté au doctorat puisse entraîner une réelle disgrâce politique.

En France, quelques universitaires font un travail de veille contre le plagiat, comme Hélène Maurel-Indart, professeure en lettres modernes à l’Université de Tours, sur son site (LePlagiat.net) ou Jean-Noël Darde, maître de conférences à l’université Paris VIII, sur son blog (archeologie-copier-coller.com). Bien que le plagiat en tant qu’atteinte au droit d’auteur soit passible de sanctions civiles et pénales, les réactions institutionnelles sont généralement rares. Un article récemment publié par l’Association des Professionnels de l’Information et de la Documentation (http://www.adbs.fr/les-bibliothecaires-face-aux-theses-plagiats-95201.htm) a donné des exemples concrets, qui sont signalés par les bibliothécaires et documentalistes chargés de mettre en ligne des thèses soutenues. Du point de vue juridique, la question de la diffusion publique est encore déterminante pour que le plagiat soit condamné en tant que délit de contrefaçon. Les nouvelles techniques de diffusion des informations (numérisation des thèses, Internet) ont amplifié le problème du plagiat des thèses, heureusement les universitaires, les documentalistes et les lecteurs veillent.

WHAT: The PhD Challenge is an innovation contest. It provides a great exposure for PhD students and young graduates in Europe for demonstrating their talents and teamwork abilities in front of leading global corporations. The PhD Challenge sponsors will also compose the jury.

WHY: The PhD Challenge will allow you to compete in teams in front of distinguished international business and research communities over prizes of 15000 Euros. Through the competition, contestants will be able to demonstrate their innovation skills and develop relationship with PhD Talent corporate partners. Indeed, it is not only a great networking opportunity with private companies; and also a fun event to share an extraordinary experience with fellow PhDs across Europe.

WHO: PhD candidates and young graduates* (limited to two years after graduation)

WHERE: Ecole de Chimie, ParisTech – on campus Quartier Latin in the 5th arrondissement, Paris. The site is 5-minute walk to Sorbonne university buildings, Pantheon, Jardin du Luxembourg, etc. Plus, there will be the most exciting early summer event in France – “La Fete de la Musique”, which inserts even more romantic elements in the city of love.

WHEN: The PhD Challenge will be conducted throughout the nearly four months of spring semester 2011 in three stages (see the chart below).

HOW:

PhD candidates & young graduates register on The PhD Challenge website starting from 01/03 for a specific problem and will access to an exclusive online community where candidates can form/or participate in multi-disciplinary teams. All teams should respect corporate partner requirements which are listed in details on the sidebar of registration page. An online pre-selection will be organized in the late week of April.

Only pre-selected teams will be invited to compete at a two-day event in Paris. All corporate partners will elaborate on the problems with key points on the first day; and each team will have 48 hours to submit their most creative solutions.

Three teams with the highest score will compete at the Grand Final. Each team will be asked to make an oral presentation in front of a jury composed by PhD Talent partners.

A gala ceremony will be held in a mysterious location. The winning team will be awarded “The PhD Challenge Award” and the members will share the prize of 15000€. Both runners-up team members can also share prizes of 5000€.

TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) is a global set of conferences curated by the American private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate “ideas worth spreading”. TEDx is a program that enables schools, businesses, libraries or just groups of friends to enjoy a TED-like experience with TEDx Events they themselves organize, design and host. At TEDx Paris Universités event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
